Chapter Six

Present

I sat back in my seat, sulking. Eli ignored me. I still had no idea where we were going, and I didn't like it. I distracted myself watching the streets as they passed. When I focused again, we were just outside the city proper in an area where large houses were being developed, some distance from the suburbs. What we were doing here, I didn't know. If we had been on the other side, I might have thought we were going to see my parents.

I looked out the windshield, curious in spite of myself, as we entered a courtyard. I gave the front yard a cursory look, where some landscaping was going on but wasn't finished. I looked beyond it to the house and froze in my seat, a very unmanly gasp escaping my lips as my eyes widened.

It was late enough the sun had set but the house had lights all over so I could see it clearly. I recognized it; I'd spent hours just that morning looking at a simulation of it. And there was… well. Why were we here?

"Eli?" I breathed his name as we stopped in the driveway, though I could see the garage, large enough to fit up to three cars.

He didn't answer me, getting out of the car and coming around to open my door for me. When I didn't move, he reached in and pulled me out and up into his arms. It was so unexpected I yelped and then blushed for making the sound.

"Could you please put me down?" I demanded voice indignant. "There's nothing wrong with my legs, you know."

"I just need to keep you still long enough for me to explain."

That didn't mean he had to carry me. I could have continued to argue but his obstinate look made me think it would be a waste of both effort and time. And, I kind of liked it.

"Eli, what are we doing here?" I muttered quickly, trying to ignore the blush.

"It's your surprise."

"But I already saw this house. Is the interior finished?"

"Not quite yet. Some finishing touches were being added last time I came here, but… other than that, it should be done."

"Oh," I muttered, and I was disappointed. I wanted to see it, but… now that I was here, I didn't think I wanted to. If I got too attached before it was even sold… or worse before the new owners came to collect… "Do you know the owners, or is it still on the market?" I asked with a little hope in my voice I couldn't hide.

Maybe I could just pretend it was mine.

"It isn't on the market, baby."

"Oh," I repeated, and I sounded sullen even to myself.

"Won't you ask who the owners are?"

I looked up at him and frowned. Did we know them? "Who?" I asked, curious again.

"It's us."

I blinked up at him in confusion for a moment, not sure what he was trying to say. Then it hit me, and I made a sound more embarrassing than a yelp; it sounded high and squeaky, but I hardly noticed.
